Director, Product Engineering

As Director, Product Engineering at Dorman Products, you will lead the Global Product Engineering Department in the successful completion of multiple cross-functional projects by coaching and mentoring, using industry best practices, and developing processes and procedures that are aligned with company strategies.


Primary Duties

•    Lead global product engineering organization in the design, development and launch of new product introductions through effective utilization of multiple engineering teams across multiple locations. 

•    Collaborative development, communication, and execution of departmental business plans that contribute to the overall success of corporate strategies.
•    Accountable for performance and results of new product development goals by leveraging early supplier involvement, influencing supplier selection, managing unauthorized supplier changes, ensuring sub-supplier management, identifying product cost drivers and understanding areas of acceptable risk.
•    Support new product launch activities by utilizing a common supplier quality launch process that includes: Site Assessments, Risk Management, APQP, Early Production Containment, PPAP.   Provide leadership for developing these skills throughout the Engineering organization.
•    Work closely with Product Management, Supply Chain, Operations, and Sales leadership on cross functional corporate initiatives.
•    Identify and develop new and emerging technologies as well as internal/external competencies required to be best in class.
•    Foster a results-driven accountable environment within the company that attracts, develops, retains, and motivates the talent needed to be best in class.
•    Identify and implement product and process improvements with an emphasis on speed to market.
•    Responsible for oversight and maintenance of department budget plan.

    • Ability to process significant amount of data in a coherent, systematic fashion and extract the most critical information.
    • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
  • Communication:
    • Ability to summarize and communicate analytical results across all levels of the organization.
    • Ability to communicate in written and oral form in and clear and articulate manner. 
    • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Experience in engineering components for the automotive industry, or automotive aftermarket a plus.
  • Direct experience with reverse engineering products a plus.
  • Proven track record in establishing deep and lasting customer partnerships.
  • Challenges the status quo, proven track record of driving change and teaching/motivating individuals to develop & implement new ways of thinking and doing business.
  • Up to 15% travel required.


Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering in Mechanical / Electrical or Manufacturing or equivalent experience. 
  • Minimum of 10 years of engineering experience preferred with previous people leadership experience; will consider experience to include advanced engineering degrees.
