Job Summary

The Automotive Technical Trainer/Instructor is responsible for delivering and continuously improving Dorman’s technical training programs for professional automotive technicians, who are the primary training audience. Training is delivered both directly by Dorman through in‑person and virtual events, and indirectly through our parts distributor customers, who host training for the technicians they support. This role leads training execution across multiple formats, assists with curriculum accuracy, and maintains high-quality instruction that is structured, engaging, and effective for all participants. The Trainer/Instructor serves as a technical expert and brand representative, driving customer and technician education and helping reduce installation‑related issues across the aftermarket.

Primary Duties

Training Delivery & Execution

  • Deliver/teach technical training programs across in‑person, virtual, and webinar formats.
  • Execute approximately 115 training classes per year (combined in-person and online).
  • Prepare thoroughly for each class to ensure professional delivery, strong student engagement, and consistent application of adult learning principles.
  • Provide hands-on demonstrations of a variety of automotive products, diagnostic processes, and installation best practices.
  • Represent Dorman at trade shows, customer events, technical conferences, and industry association activities.

Curriculum & Content Development

  • Support curriculum updates, enhancements, and adjustments as directed by the Training Director.
  • Assist in the creation, revision, and improvement of program documentation, training materials, communications, job aids, and instructional tools.
  • Assist in developing presentations, training videos, and product-specific learning modules.
  • Ensure all content reflects up‑to‑date OE system change and emerging technologies.

Technical Expertise & Continuous Learning

  • Maintain a high level of competence by:
    • Reviewing technical literature and service information
    • Participating in train‑the‑trainer sessions
    • Performing hands‑on component or vehicle-based work
    • Attending relevant training events or classes
    • Engaging in automotive training-related professional groups
  • Provide technical insights to Sales, Product Management, and Engineering to support product improvement and customer feedback loops.

Field Support & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Sales and Customer Experience teams to support key accounts and distributors with tailored technical education.
  • Provide feedback on training effectiveness through tracking attendance, surveys, and performance metrics.

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum 5+ years of experience conducting adult learning programs OR a combination of training experience and technical automotive background.
  • Strong understanding of automotive electrical systems, diagnostics, mechanical repair, and common failure modes.
  • Demonstrated experience presenting or teaching technical content to groups.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, training platforms, and diagnostic tools.
  • Ability to travel approximately 65% of the time.
  • Ability to lift 20 pounds and transport training materials/equipment.
  • Ability to meet physical requirements such as reaching, carrying materials between buildings, standing during instruction, and operating demonstration equipment.

Education / Experience

Required:

    • Minimum 5+ years of experience conducting adult learning programs OR a combination of training experience and technical automotive background.

Preferred:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Automotive Technology, Education, or related field.
    • ASE Certifications (A-Series, L1) strongly preferred.
    • Experience as an automotive technician, diagnostician, or aftermarket/OE technical specialist.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $88,300 to $131,400. This role is also eligible for a bonus. The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will depend on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge and skills, experience, business needs, geographical location, and internal pay equity. Compensation decisions are made based on the specific facts and circumstances of each role and candidate.
